Theatre TVAZZ og Leikhús SKIFT kynna:

UPPHAV

Færeyskt leikrit í Edinborgarhúsinu, sunnudaginn 18. apríl.

UPPHAV (isl.: upphaf) means ocean that whirls up – and also in Faroese language it has the double meaning of origin/ancestors. The monologue is about both. Ocean that whirls up and ancestors, our origin, where we come from. Upphav the monologue is from our Faroese origin. The Northatlantic ocean and the mountains are the frame and the ground premise of our survival. But also the circumstances that for decades has taken life. “The ocean gives and the ocean takes” is a wellknown Faroese saying. And there is lived truth behind the words. The sea as the provider of food and survival and the people lost at sea, drowned fishermen and sailors. Throughout generations grief was not talked about, silence was a survival strategy. The most vital back then was to get food and heat. We say that we have a silence culture here in the Faroe Islands and are not so keen on talking or showing emotions. With Upphav we open up for the conversations in the hope that theatre can create a space, where generational trauma and collective grief can be framed, perhaps even healed.

UPPHAV is about the day of misfortune in April 1st. in 1919 on the small island of Hestur, where two of the islands fishing boats disapeared while out fishing and most of the village men drowned. Left behind in the village where the widows, the elderly and the children. The actress Gunnvá Zachariasen comes from the island Hestur. Her grandmother Óluva from her father’s side was six years old, when the accident happened. Through the eyes of the grandmother – the child’s experience of the accident and the aftermath – is the story carried onward. Upphav is a story and a meditation about the community and the aftermath of the accident, the struggle that the women and children left behind had to deal with in order to maintain an existance that demanded physical strength, mental stamina and a caring community.

The actor Gunnvá Zachariasen and director Marita S. Dalsgaard have co-written/co-created the performance. Anna Katrin Ø. Egilstrøð has composed the music and made the sound. The visual design has Silje Grimstad from Norway created. The scenograpfy is made out of textiles and materials, that where at hand. As a greeting to the women generations back, who created something beautifull, lifegiving and lovely from materials they had at hand in a harsh and poor society.

We wish to celebrate our fore-mothers and in gratitude set a memorial over their struggle, their caretaking and their ability to create and rebuild.
